“The Most Dangerous Tool is the One You’re Using!”
Your Safety at the KCWG: A Commitment to Excellence
At the Kansas City Woodworkers’ Guild, safety isn’t just a rule—it’s a shared commitment. Our Guild members are dedicated to a comprehensive Safety Program designed to protect and educate everyone.
Our Safety Program’s core goals are:
- Educating all Guild members and officers on best safety practices.
- Encouraging and promoting safe woodworking attitudes and behaviors, both in the Guild shop and at home.
- Training members on the safest ways to operate various woodworking power tools and employ effective techniques.
- Informing members about the best personal protective equipment (PPE) to guard against chemicals, noise, dust, and flying objects.
Cultivating a Safe Mindset: Key Safety Attitudes
The Safety Committee encourages every member to regularly review key safety attitudes crucial for working in any shop. Remember, personal responsibility for your own safety is paramount at the Guild and in your personal workshop. With many new woodworkers joining us each month, it’s vital to reinforce principles that might seem like common sense to experienced members. Even seasoned woodworkers benefit from a refresher on these critical attitudes:
- Focus: A good safety attitude means concentrating fully on the task at hand. Distractions can lead to errors. If your mind is elsewhere, it’s best to step away and return when you can give your full attention.
- Strength: This isn’t about muscle. It’s about having the courage to do the right thing, even when you feel pressure to take shortcuts. A strong safety attitude means consistently following established procedures.
- Time: A good safety attitude means taking the necessary time to do things correctly. Always use the proper guards and PPE. Ask yourself: Is saving a few minutes truly worth a lifelong injury?
- Responsibility: If you care about your well-being and your family, you must take personal responsibility to follow safety procedures and avoid shortcuts. Your safety is in your hands.
- Risk: While woodworking involves inherent risks, a good safety attitude means being smart and avoiding unnecessary risks. Don’t gamble with your well-being; always adhere to safety protocols. A one-in-a-thousand risk is never worth the potential cost.
Join Our Safety Committee!
Our dedicated, in-house Safety Committee meets monthly to review all aspects of shop safety, including equipment, upcoming events, and existing procedures. This continuous review process helps us maintain a secure and productive environment.
Guild members are always welcome and encouraged to participate in these meetings. Your insights and feedback are invaluable in shaping our safety protocols. By working together and following these vital guidelines, we can all enjoy a safer, more enjoyable woodworking experience at the Guild.
Recommended Personal Protective Equipment
Essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the Shop
Your safety is our top priority, and wearing the right Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is crucial. Here are the types of protection we recommend for use in the shop:
Hearing Protection
Loud tools can damage your hearing over time. We recommend earmuffs with a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 25 or higher. Earmuffs are generally more comfortable than earplugs and are much easier to put on and take off quickly.
Dust Protection
Wood dust can be a serious health hazard. A great choice for effective protection is a half-mask respirator, like 3M’s 6500 Series Respirator paired with their 2097 P100 Particulate Filters. This will help keep your lungs safe from fine dust particles.
Eye Protection
Protecting your eyes is non-negotiable. Your safety glasses must be ANSI Z87.1 rated and include side shield protection. It’s critical that safety glasses are worn at all times you’re in the shop whenever power equipment is in use.
Staying safe means being prepared. Make sure you have these essential PPE items every time you come to the shop!
Storm Shelter
Weather Related Safety at the KCWG Shop
Your safety is always our priority, especially when severe weather strikes. If a tornado siren sounds while you’re at the shop, here’s what you need to know about taking shelter:
Tornado Shelter Locations
Our designated tornado shelters are the bathrooms and the nearby Training storage area. If there are fewer people in the shop, the bathrooms are your first choice for shelter. During larger gatherings, like Guild meetings, both the bathrooms and the Training storage area provide the best protection.
Stay Weather Aware
Before heading to the shop, it’s always a good idea to check the weather conditions in the area. Understanding weather alerts can help you stay prepared:
- Tornado Watch: This means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop in and near the watch area. Stay alert!
- Tornado Warning: This is serious. A tornado has actually been sighted or indicated on radar and is occurring or imminent in the warning area. Seek shelter immediately.
- Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms (with high winds, large hail, etc.) to develop.
- Severe Thunderstorm Warning: A severe thunderstorm has been observed or indicated on radar and is occurring or imminent.
Remember, your personal safety extends to being aware of weather conditions and knowing where to go. If tornado sirens sound while you’re working in the shop, please head to the designated shelter areas promptly.
