Safety

“The Most Dangerous Tool is the One You’re Using!”

  • The Kansas City Woodworkers’ Guild is comprised of members who are dedicated to the following Safety Program goals and objectives.
  • Formulate a comprehensive safety program that educates the Kansas City Woodworkers’ Guild members and officers.
  • To encourage and promote safe woodworking attitudes and behaviors by all members when pursuing their woodworking activities in the guild wood shop or at home.
  • Educate Guild members to the safest ways to operate various woodworking power tools and use the safest woodworking techniques.
  • Educate Guild members in the best personal protective equipment to protect themselves against chemicals, noise, dust exposures and flying objects.

Join the Safety Committee in taking some time to review key safety attitudes you should have while working in your shop. Everyone should be taking personal responsibility for his or her own personal safety in Guild and his or her shop.  With so many new woodworkers joining the Guild each month, it is important to reinforce the things that may seem like common sense to an experienced woodworker. Even experienced woodworkers can always use a refresher on these key safety attitudes.

  • FOCUS – A good safety attitude means that you focus on the task. How well are you concentrating on the job? If you have other things on your mind, you may be distracted.
  • STRENGTH – No, this does not mean muscle strength. What it means is the strength to do the right thing, even when you are under time or other pressure to take shortcuts. A good safety attitude means you have the strength to follow the safety procedures.
  • TIME – A good safety attitude means taking the time to do things correctly and using the right guard or Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Is saving a few minutes worth a lifelong injury?
RESPONSIBILITY – If you care about yourself and your family, YOU will have to take responsibility and follow the safety procedures and not take short cuts.
  • RISK – We all take risks. A good safety attitude means being smart and avoid taking unnecessary risks. A one in a thousand risk is not worth the possible cost. Do not play the odds, always follow the safety procedures.

Recommended Personal Protective Equipment

  • Hearing protection: Select earmuffs that have a 25 or higher NRR (Noise Reduction Rating). Earmuffs are more comfortable than earplugs, and they make donning and doffing easier.
  • Dust protection: A good choice is a half-mask respirator, such as 3M’s 6500 Series Respirator with their 2097 P100 Particulate Filters.
  • Eye protection: Safety glasses must be ANSI (American Natinal Standards Institute) Z87.1 rated and include side shield protection.  Safety glasses must be worn at all times you are in the shop while power equipment is being used.

Storm Shelter

Where is the Tornado Shelter in the Shop?

The bathrooms and the nearby Training storage area have been designated tornado shelters in our shop.  If a tornado siren sounds, depending upon how many people are in the shop at the time, the bathrooms are the first choice as a shelter. If a tornado siren sounds, during a meeting, the bathrooms and Training storage area provide the best  shelter.

Prior to arriving at the shop, be aware of the weather conditions in the area.

  • Tornado Watch means that conditions are conducive to the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area.
  • Tornado Warning – A tornado has actually been sighted by spotters or indicated on radar and is occurring or imminent in the warning area.
  • Severe Thunderstorm Watch – Conditions are conducive to the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.
  • Severe Thunderstorm Warning – A severe thunderstorm has actually been observed by spotters or indicated on radar, and is occurring or imminent in the warning area.

Shop safety extends to you being aware and seeking shelter if the tornado sirens sound while working in the shop.
