Safety Requirements To Get The Green Name Badge And Use The Shop Assets

People join the Kansas City Woodworkers’ Guild for many reasons, but most want to use our Guild shop, including its collection of hand and power tools. To have that access, for safety reasons, you will need to earn a Green Name Badge, also referred to as a Green Card or Green Tag. (The minimum age to be a Guild member is 13, but the minimum age to use the shop is 18.) Please note that in order to use the shop outside of classes you must join the Guild at a membership level of Sawdust Maker or above and obtain a green card. In order to take classes with any membership type you must obtain a green card. Once you become a member, the process for earning your badge is as follows:

Read the Guild’s Safety Rules.

  1. Complete the Safety Test.  You will receive  a link to access the test site along with the necessary passwords to complete the Safety Test in a New Member email that you will receive upon becoming a Guild member. You may refer to the Safety Rules while taking the test, as it is an open-book test.
    1. Once you start taking the online test, you have 90 days to complete the test; otherwise, you will need to start over.
    2. If you score less than 90%: Re-read the Safety Rules, and then repeat step 1.
    3. You MUST PASS the safety test in order to continue with the process.
    4. If you score 90% or better: Continue to step 2.
  2.  Print out, fill in, and sign the Liability Waiver.  Bring your completed, signed Liability Waiver with you to the class offering of your choice.
  3.  Register for a class. There are two options for the required Safety Orientation training after completion of your safety test:
    1. Safety Orientation Class:  Safety Orientation Schedule
      1. Length:  2 hours (typically offered 11 or more times per year)
      2. How to Register:  In a single email, you will receive your Safety Test results and a link/password to register for a Safety Orientation session.
      3. Cost:  Free
    2. Rough to Ready Class:  (Scheduled class dates available after successful completion of safety test).
Class Description:  This class will be the first hands-on step in becoming a real, safe woodworker! Set up and safely use a comprehensive array of 10 top-quality woodworking machines – sliding compound miter saw, radial arm saw, jointer, thickness planer, table saws (rip, crosscut and dado), re-saw bandsaw, wide belt sander, and router table. In this process, transform a Rough, straight-from-the-sawmill piece of hardwood into a beautiful little 5×9 mitered-corner box, Ready for application of finish at home.
      1. Length 4-6 Hours
      2. Scheduled numerous times per month on any given month
      3. How to Register:  In a single email, you will receive your Safety Test results and a link/password to register for a Rough to Ready class session.
      4. Cost:  Separate Fee (Based on membership level at the point you signup for the class.)
  4. Attend the Safety Orientation training class for which you registered.  Turn in all your documents and your temporary name badge to the class instructor.

Once you have completed the process above, your Green Name Badge will be issued and posted in the Guild lobby for your use within 10 days. The Green Name Badge designates your authorization to use the shop, based on your level of membership.

Note: Non-members MAY NOT complete the online Safety Test or participate in the safety orientation.  Completed Safety Test and Liability Waiver MUST be brought to the Safety Orientation.

Note: Membership levels of Student, Senior and Regular  MAY NOT utilize the Shop and it assets outside of instructor led classes.
