Discover the Art of Marquetry!

Marquetry is a process of creating pictures in wood using thin veneers of many species: The veneers are cut and taped together, then glued down to a background material. Don Peterson teaches the full marquetry process for creating pictures with veneers using the packet method. Through demonstrations, one-on-one guidance, and hands-on practice, students learn to select a design, choose veneers, sand shade, assemble and cut the design, glue, press and clean-up

We will create an 8 X 10-inch panel. Several prepared designs will be available to choose from. Commercial veneer, both dyed and natural, will be supplied by the instructor.

What will students learn in the class?

  • About commercial veneers, dyed and natural, where to buy and what to look for.
  • Selecting veneer for use in a marquetry picture.
  • Veneer repair, how to deal with defects.
  • What glues are available and used for veneer work.
  • How to use a scroll saw, what blades to use.
  • Sand shading veneer to add depth.
  • Choosing a substrate.
  • How to use veneer tape.
  • How to use a vacuum press.
